CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAM
2012-13
INTRODUCTION
Dr. Allan King of Queen’s University in his landmark study The Good School identified a strong extra-curricular program as playing a key role in developing students’ sense of belonging and satisfaction. His findings showed that a broad well-delivered co-curricular program greatly enhances the atmosphere of a school and students’ sense of well being. As well, co-curricular activities help students to identify with their school, and participation encourages them to socialize and become friends with fellow students; all these factors contribute to good “school spirit”.
A. N. Myer’s extensive co-curricular program offers activities of interest to all students in the school. Students are encouraged to participate fully in the athletic, artistic, social and cultural life of the school. Involvement in the school’s co-curricular program will enable students to make new friends and develop talents and interests outside of the regular school curriculum. Coaching, leadership and supervision of our co-curricular program is provided voluntarily by members of our teaching staff as well as by interested members of our community.
The costs involved are obtained from the school budget, activity card sales, fund raisers and by the students themselves. All clubs and teams welcome current students, Grade 9 students, and students who are new to the school. Orientation sessions and the morning announcements keep students posted on club and team meetings.
Involvement in school activities is recorded for points toward t
he school pin, school letter, school plaque, and for consideration in the granting of awards and scholarships.

School Classification
Myer competes in not only Zone III competition, but also at the SOSSA and OFSAA levels. It is classified as a “AA” but often competes at the “AAA” level.

Students must meet the following age requirements for individual sports:

|
Although many sports activities offer competition up to OFSAA competition, many activities are provided in a “club” atmosphere that has less emphasis on competition and are intended for their recreational benefits such as physical activity through participation, fun and recreation. Depending on individual goals and aspirations, a wide variety of activities will hopefully provide an outlet for all students to get actively involved. At Myer, we believe “a healthy mind in a sound body” leads to success.

Student Council
Deemed one of the most active schools in the board, Myer’s Student Council plays an integral part in the lives of numerous students. The council plans and supports a broad range of activities for students throughout the year and financially supports school clubs, activities and athletics. In addition, the council organizes buyouts and food drives to help support local community agencies. Often, a portion of the proceeds from school dances and other fundraisers is donated to local charities.
|
| The council consists of an executive and elected representative from each grade level in the school. Grade 9 representatives are elected in October after they have settled into school routines and are familiar with council and its functions. Historically, council has enjoyed the full support of students at dances and other functions. For more info, click here! |
