Description of Course:


This course is designed to extend the knowledge and skills students need to meet the entrance requirements for specific college and university programs. This course focuses on studio activities in a variety of media. Students will create art works that explore a wide range of subject matter and will evaluate art works, providing grounds for their aesthetic judgements. They will also examine historical and cultural concepts of Western art and art forms from various world cultures and eras to support their study of specific media. The development of a personal presentation portfolio will be an ongoing requirement of this course. Students will be encouraged to display samples of their work in public places.

Unit Titles

Unit 1 The Artist as Fact Finder and Experimenter 22 hr.

Unit 2 The Artist as Social and/or Cultural Contributor 26 hr.

Unit 3 The Artist as Reflective and Conceptual Thinker 22 hr.

Unit 4 The Artist as Independent Thinker 40 hr.

     

Assessment and Evaluation 

According to Ministry policy, the primary purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve student learning. It will be based upon the provincial curriculum expectations and the achievement levels outlined in the secondary curriculum policy documents.


Assessment is the process of gathering information from a variety of sources such as assignments, demonstrations, projects, learning skills, etc.


Evaluation is the process of judging the value of the student’s work on the basis of established criteria and assigning a value to represent that quality. The course evaluation is based on the DSBN Subject Council Consistency in Assessment and Evaluation Agreement, 2003-2004.


Learning Skills


These skills are supportive of student learning, marks serve another purpose. A student’s ability to work with others, to attend class regularly, to be punctual, and to keep up with the work and maintain an accurate and complete notebook is very important and has an impact on how well a student performs. The report card allows these skills to be recorded for the public record. Therefore, teachers will continue to record information on these skills and assign a value to them for the report card.

Types of Assessment, Evaluation and Activities

1. Studio Projects (finished work done in class; based on rubrics, skill builder exercises, rough drafts)

2. Sketch Assignments (creative homework sketches; based on creative problem solving strategies)

3. Written Communication (essay, projects, presentations tests; based on unit topics, questions/issues)

4. Portfolio Presentation (unit 4 summative assessment; based on a interview with rubric guide)
